Mbulo Gardens
The coral gardens at Mbulo are home to the most gorgeous display of corals our divers have ever seen. Soft pastels of pink, green, yellow and cream blend together into a painting worthy of any museum. As it is late afternoon and the light is starting to dim, the coral polyps have started to blossom as they get ready for their nightly feeding ritual. The reef is truly alive.
Over 600 species of coral have been identified in the Solomon Islands and it feels like all of them must live on this reef. Every size and shapes is represented from the dainty finger corals, to huge brain corals, to the aptly named organ corals that sit outside of the nearby Cathedral dive site.
Corals are not the only treasure on this site. We also see three broad club cuttlefish who have made their homes in the coral gardens. They put on an impressive display of flashing colour and constantly changing skin textures. They are communicating in a language sadly unknown to us but mesmerizing all the same.
